Interesting discussion here. For me, the FOTYs always crack me up because of the unbelievable author worship that goes on there.

You talk like I went onto soompi for a week or something, gave it a shot, and hated it, when in truth, the situation is nothing like that at all. I was at Soompi for YEARS, I have posted several stories on Soompi, I have made friends through Soompi fanfiction, I have an entire notepad file that takes forever just to load of quotes I gathered from Soompi stories, and yes, I have found my fair share of quality fanfics, but what I am saying is that the times and generations have changed and the quality of stories has diminished significantly.

I like cliches. I like unrealistic plot lines. I like reading about everything that could never be. But I also strongly believe that when you write a completely unbelievable story, there must still be elements of it that are realistic. And there must be something about your story that distinguishes it from the rest, even if it's small.

I did not drop Soompi as if it were a ticking bomb I wanted nothing to do with. As the title of this entry is, I grew out of it. My shift away from Soompi fanfiction was gradual, and it eventually amounted to me not visiting at all.

Maybe my opinion sounded like a ranting, but maybe that's because it IS one. This was written in my personal blog, amongst many other rantings about life, school, friends, and whatever else of mine, and this entry in particular just happened to receive more attention than others. So yes, it is a ranting. And yes, I too am still a teenager, so it's not as though I have completely passed my whole adolescence, growing up, still childish phase.

I think perhaps if you think rationally, that many stories follow 'timeless' storylines... for example - large differences in class and rank from Titanic, Poor girls in rich schools with snobby but sexy boys from Hanayoridango, Crossdressing from Mulan and She's the Man, and of course, getting married to someone you hate only to find that they're the one, courtesy of Goong.

I guess it's hard thinking up story lines with these amazing memories of stories you've seen before. And let's get this straight. We've all been teenagers before. I myself am currently one. I figure though that they're just unleashing these memories of amazing plots which are a tribute to their overall awesomeness but which are used so much they become cliched.

Cliched. Let's get this straight though - things that are labeled cliched might not be totally bogus fictions. Sometimes it's that cute little cliche that people like to read about. I figure a lot of korean dramas must be cliched by now, what with the whole repetition of pregnancies, cancers, and wealthy people.

But saying Soompi itself isn't worth looking at is, to me, just you venting out anger. No offense, it's just that good things in life take searching. Searching for a car, searching for a job, searching for a significant other. If I had your mindset about Soompi the way I do about boys I might as well leave my city and try elsewhere, like Zimbabwe.

Perhaps that's a rather extreme example but what I'm saying is, if you really think the stories listed in 'Popular' are really crap, keep searching - it makes the 'good fanfictions' so much more valuable.

Hopefully you don't give up on Soompi for real. You could miss out on some really cool stuff. If you really hate it, there's always the backspace button placed conveniently on the upper right hand side of your keyboard! :) (the teenager in me compels me to use smileys...:D)

Har har, i thought i was the only one weirdly piss off about Jacob imprinting on Bella's daughter and then giving her a nickname. I found it such an add on to have Bella being in love with Jacob and then totally forgetting about Jacob when she became a vampire. It was not necessary. I usually like the underdog of the stories like in My Girl, but Jacob is just some really annoying stubborn kid. But then again its also Bella’s fault. I don't know who i hate more Jacob or Bella.
And i agree these book are really overrated, the plot is like some mangled plot from a k-drama (which are weirdly addictive) with vampires and the writer just had to add a some messed up love triangle. But I think you missed the point though...>=)
People read this because of Edward =P

I just wrote an entire essay that was pretty much too much.

So here's my opinion.

I agree.

In the end, does growing out of soompi mean that you no longer relate to what it's saying? Cliche, cliche, cliche. Flat, stupid, pointless, childish, quantity over quality. In so many ways I understand, but another part of me tells me that I was there once and I wanted these people to read what I wrote to understand who I was.

Even though the saying about sheep and trends comes to mind, it's more like giving and receiving an overload of indulgence that's become popular. People always say that too much of anything is poison. Did I just say that? Well, it wasn't an insult but it wasn't a compliment either.

I agree with pretty much everything you've written up there.

I'm a teenager, and have been a soompier for about a year now. The main reason I joined was because of the fanfix (I kind of lost the url for the soompi fic library so yeah). I wouldn't say I'm a 'good' reader, but when I like a book I go crazy over it and read it non-stop. The fics that are in soompi now disgusting, it's all filled with those typical fake couplings like 'wonderbang' and 'soshibang'. You can usually find some pretty good fics if you search, and I know authors who bring some pretty good stuff. I recommened the soompier 'Rey' - I've read all of her fanfics so far, and her writing ability is AMAZING.

I don't think it's only the fanfics, but it's the fans in general as well. I was so glad when I found out they were getting rid of all those fake pairing couples in the photo thread - it was literally driving me up the friggin wall.

I wish soompi had a filter for good and... not-so-good posts.

That is so true.
About how that would be taking away everything that makes college fun. or a lot of what makes it fun.
But I'm doing okay on my soda resolution so far...
